What are sentence fragments?
This section explains the structure of a complete
grammatical sentence and gives examples of simple and complex sentences
and sentence fragments.
The Rule
For a sentence to be complete - to make sense as an utterance on its own - it must contain both:
- a subject
- a finite verb (a verb form that shows either tense or modality).
A subordinate clause is not a complete sentence. Subordinating conjunctions always join two clauses together into one sentence.
