What are sentence fragments?

This section explains the structure of a complete grammatical sentence and gives examples of simple and complex sentences and sentence fragments.

The Rule

Sentence fragments are incomplete sentences.
For a sentence to be complete - to make sense as an utterance on its own - it must contain both:
A sentence can contain other information as well. However, if it doesn't contain a subject and a finite verb, then it's not a sentence.
A subordinate clause is not a complete sentence. Subordinating conjunctions always join two clauses together into one sentence.
